When a young university student Phillipa Huddleston sits down in the office of Fitzhugh Investigation, she wants Fitz to find her mother, Barbara Huddleston. The problem? She’s been gone for four years and the police were never notified. Why wouldn’t her father report his wife missing? Had he killed her? Why didn’t Pippa’s wealthy grandparents do the same?

The case takes Fitz out of the familiar environs of his hometown, Fawcettville, to New Tunstall, a small town on the Ohio River filled with secrets. Once the center of the country’s pottery business, New Tunstall now struggles with unemployment, opioids and poverty. With no  familiar sources, Fitz must turn to two unlikely allies to help him solve his case.

Fitz tries to convince Detectives Howarth and Manus they're headed down the wrong path in their search for a subject. Fitz talks with Mac Brewster about his pain.

Fitz, Howarth and Manus begin to start putting everything together with the help of some surveillance photos. Alicia recognizes her attacker.

Fitz reads some disturbing posts by Chandler Blane and decides to speak with Mac Brewster, head of college security and a former FPD cop, like Fitz. Surveillance photos hit home with Fitz.

Fitz looks to see if his home is still under surveillance by police. Alicia begins to remember more. Mary Margaret pitches a suspect in Alicia's assault and kidnapping.

Alicia and Fitz begin to heal. A former client is found dead.

Fitz finds it hard to shake his police tail, but manages to do it. Travis Molnar maintains his story about Smoot. Howarth and Manus get back in touch.

Is Fitz and Alicia's marriage on the rocks?  A client gets his just deserts.
